The short version
Both rent you browsers and real devices over the internet so you do not have to own them. They are close enough in capability that the decision usually comes down to price at your volume, which exact devices you need, and how each one behaves inside your network.
Why you would use either
Because maintaining a device lab is worse than it sounds. Real phones need charging, updating, replacing and physically finding. Older Safari versions cannot simply be installed on a machine you own. Renting turns all of that into a subscription.
Both services offer the same two modes: hands-on sessions for reproducing a customer's problem, and remote execution for an automated suite you already have.
How to choose between them
Feature-by-feature comparison will not separate them; they leapfrog each other constantly. These four questions will:
- Which exact devices and browser versions would block a release? Confirm each candidate covers that list today, not in general.
- How many tests must run at the same time? Parallel sessions are the main price driver, and the difference at your volume can be substantial.
- Can it reach your test environment? Both offer tunnelling into a private network. Get your security team's view before, not after.
- How good is the failure evidence? Video, logs and network traces are what make a remote failure diagnosable. Compare them on a real broken test.
Before you buy either
Check whether you need one at all. If your release matrix is Chrome and Firefox on desktop, local browsers already cover it and a subscription buys you nothing. The case gets strong the moment real iOS devices, older Android versions, or a genuinely wide browser matrix appear on the list.

Will our tests need rewriting?
Usually not — you change where the tests connect, not what they do. Expect to fix a few hidden timing assumptions that remote latency exposes.
Are remote runs slower?
Yes, network latency is real. Plan for a longer suite runtime, and treat any test that only fails remotely as a timing weakness worth fixing.
Is a real device really different from a simulator?
Yes. Simulators cannot reproduce real hardware, manufacturer modifications, battery behaviour or genuine mobile networks — which is exactly why these services exist.
